Creating your Life purpose statement

Being clear about why you were created and where you are headed would really help you stay focused in a world where there are lots of opportunities and options available to either pull or push you. Your purpose serves as your road map through life – Tosan A.

I remember when I was working on getting back my pre-baby body, a year after I had my beautiful baby, I used to stay motivated going through quotes from other people with similar goals, I came across this quote which helped me not to swim in guilt in those occasional moments of weakness either from binge-ing or missing exercises.

Thinking of it now, I realize that if I did not have a direction, If I did not know my purpose for doing the things I did, a simple wrong turn could have been all that was needed to make me give up.

Our purpose brings out the passion in us, gives us a reason to get out of bed and take a few more steps towards our goals even when we are physically tired. It answers the very personal question of why we were created.

It’s important for us to identify our purpose and let it guide our plans, projects and decisions so we never find ourselves living other people’s purposes for our lives or working tirelessly to meet the expectations of others for us.

Your inner guidance system is your Joy – Jack Canfield

A lot has been written on how to identify your life’s purpose; still one of the simplest ones I have seen can be found in Jack Canfield’s book – How to get from where you are to where you want to be, where in 4 actionable steps, your life purpose statement can be drawn up.

  1. List two of your unique personal qualities –
    1. Friendly
    2. Accommodating
  2. List one or two ways you enjoy expressing those qualities when interacting with others –
    1. entertaining
    2. sharing
  3. If there were no limitations and the world was perfect, what would it look like? How are people interacting with one another? Write down your answer in a statement in the present tense describing the ultimate experience as you imagine it and feel it.
    1. Everyone is happy and friendly with one another, living in peace and caring for everyone around them including people they do not know.
  4. Combine the three (3) prior sub-divisions into a single statement
    1. My Life’s purpose is to use my friendliness to cheer and entertain people making them happier, caring and accommodating to one another bringing peace to the world one person at a time.

Note: As easy as it looks, your answers may not flow quite as effortlessly as you’d hope. So I suggest you do either of these things; use a pencil so you can erase and tweak as much as you need to or repeat the exercise enough times till you have an empowering statement that you can run through life with.

Other examples are;

To create and inspire one million millionaires who each give one million dollars to their church or charity

To uplift humanity’s consciousness through business

Tosan’s take: The first step is to write it, the next step is to read it everyday!

This exercise is drawn from the book – How to get from where you are to where you want to be by Jack Canfield.
